As per the Hindu mythology, at the time of  Mahabharata, Indraprastha was the capital of Pandavas and ruled by them. That Indraprasth is today's Delhi . It is strongly believed that Purana Qila was built on the  Indraprastha .It is belived that this land was initially a huge mass of forests called 'Khandavaprastha' which was burnt down to build the city of Indraprastha. The king Prithviraj Chauhan was defeated by Muhammad Ghori in 1192 , Muhammad Ghori was a  Muslim invader from Afghanistan,he made strongest efforts to capture northrn India.[26] By 1200, native Hindu resistance had begun to crumble, the dominance of foreign Turkic Muslim dynasties in north India was to last for the next five centuries. The slave general of Ghori, Qutb-ud-din Aibak was ruling India northern parts,Muhammad Ghori  return to Ghor. Muhammad Ghori died in 1206 AD. He had no sons/daughters and so his generals declared themselves independent in different parts of his empire. Qutb-ud-din laid the foundation of the Delhi Sultanate and the Mamluk dynasty. He began construction of the Qutb Minar and Quwwat-al-Islam (Might of Islam) mosque, the earliest extant mosque in India.  Iltutmish (1211–36)  was his successor .After Iltutmish,  Razia Sultan, daughter of Iltutmish , succeeded him as the Sultan of Delhi. Razia Sultan was the first and only woman to rule over Delhi.
For the consecutive  three hundred years, Delhi was ruled by a succession of Turkic and an Afghan, Lodi dynasty.But as we know nothing is permanent ,the sultanate was destroyed in 1526 by Babur, founder of the Mughal dynasty.Mughal ruled Delhi for 300 years ,But After the death of Aurangzeb in 1707, the Mughal Empire's influence started declining rapidly as the Hindu Maratha Empire from Deccan Plateau rose to prominence .In 1803, during the Second Anglo-Maratha War, the British East India Company defeated the Maratha forces in the Battle of Delhi.Initially British started occupying coastal area of India,we can understand they used to come India by seeps only , so occupying coastal regions was easy .After war of 1857, Delhi went to direct control of British and Calcutta (Now Kolkata) was declared capital of British India. They made Kolkata as their capital.As Calcutta was in Eastern part, so it makes it difficult and time consuming to reach other parts of India. Transport was not as fast as it is today. But in 1911 Delhi was again made the capital of India. It was made a Union Territory in 1956.Delhi is located in centre of India so from Delhi government can easily access city like Mumbai , Chennai and Kolkata. This make Delhi centre for trade also
